Teleconference pass codes available thru Seth Rice at 412-394-5490, Pittsburgh Speaker: varies Description: Green Buildings and Community Development-Getting the Rules, Incentives and Financing Right
June 25, 2008 – Noon to 1:30 pm at Babst Calland offices (Two Gateway Center, 7th Floor, Downtown)
The advancement of green buildings and use of renewables as a tool of sustainable community development is growing. Over 700 cities have joined the President's Climate Leaders Program in less than two years. The building sector is responsible for 39% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the US and 70% of all electricity consumption, in response Climate change legislation will include provisions that will lead to the development of more energy efficient buildings. The utilization of renewables is increasingly contributing to sustainable community development primarily with solar and wind; and more recently with biomass, landfill gas, solid waste and geothermal.
Subjects to be covered in the June Program include:
Reshaping local law to foster renewables, energy efficiency and green buildings; a discussion of LEED building requirements, solar access laws, wind ordinances, sustainable zoning provisions, homeowner association by-law as obstacles, vegetation and green roof requirements and other measures. What contribution can local government make?
Building code changes and recent national efforts to promote code changes spearheaded by the Alliance to Save Energy across the country. Is this the next federal and state initiative?
Movement towards getting building efficiencies recognized as offsets with value in the megawatt or white tag market. Such recognition would offer an additional revenue source to fund this critical aspect of energy demand reduction. Is this an avenue for expansion in the national climate debate and post Kyoto implementation?
Green building financing principles - securitized green building mortgages as collateralized debt obligation, portfolios and advanced project finance principles with green building criteria and attributes. Do we need new underwriting principles and what would they provide?
